The Editors Letter

Does this mean 2021 is nearly over?? I seem to blink and another month has gone by, I don’t know about you! November is definitely upon us and I certainly feel a lot more positive about the upcoming festive season than I did this time last year! There are events coming up at the Town Hall for example, such as the ever popular Quiz night on Friday 19th November and also a Christmas Fayre on Saturday 4th December (more details inside). St Peter and St Paul’s church will be having their wonderful Christmas Tree festival again in December and The Old King’s Head will be having a Christmas Fayre on the 11th & 12th December. Lots to look forward to!

I do hope most of you received a copy of October’s Kirton News through your letterbox again! We are covering most of the village and will hopefully be fully operational again by the end of the year! We do still have copies in the local shops so you can always pick one up when you’re out and about.

I’m so pleased to hear that the village Rememberance Parade will be taking place in full again this year on Sunday 14th November. This is something that Kirton does so well. We come out in our droves to remember and commemorate the fallen and there is always such a sense of community and mutual respect. I’m always so proud to be part of it and I hope to see many of you there.

Run, walk or prance to raise vital
funds for St Barnabas Hospice

Your favourite red nosed friend is back this Christmas at St Barnabas Hospice. Rudy will be returning in 2021 to spread the Christmas joy!

Rudy’s Run gives all children a chance to get involved, dress up and spread a little Christmas spirit this winter.

Registering for Rudy’s Run is FREE and includes pairs of antlers and a red noses for each child and a Santa costume for one lucky teacher. The Hospice will also send a ‘virtual’ assembly from Father Christmas himself, and information about how the Hospice could support you, your staff and pupils in the future. Rudy’s Run isn’t a race, but a chance to run, walk or prance at school on the playground/school field or at your after-school club to raise vital funds for St Barnabas Hospice in Lincolnshire.

We just ask each child to raise £5 to support the Hospice. This can be done by your school/nursery/childcare setting up a central JustGiving page that everyone donates to.

Slovenia Adventure; Trek, Bike and Kayak 15th to 19th June 2022

Meet The Locals

This month we’re talking to Victoria Everest, Operations Manager at The Old King’s Head!

1) You’re Operations Manager at The Old King’s Head, did you work anywhere locally before and in similar positions?

Previously to this role I opened Travelodge in Boston and was an implementation manager with them for 4 years. So lots of hospitality experience! Before this I was a carer in a care home in Gosberton.

2) What’s it been like since the opening?

It’s been amazing! Meeting local people who have lots of memories of the Old King’s Head in it’s previous identities has been lovely.

3) Have you felt welcomed into the village?

We’ve had lots of support from people in Kirton and the surrounding villages and have been lucky enough to welcome Kirton Ladies Luncheon club for their monthly meal (who had previously been travelling to Bicker for their lunches). The support has been amazing and what’s great is that the majority of the team are also from Kirton.

4) Any future plans ie. offering evening meals etc?

We’re concentrating on providing the best service we can so no plans at present for evening meals. That being said, we do have function rooms that could be hired out in the evening. The community room is also available for clubs, groups, meetings and functions.

Kirton Church Fund

The October draw takes place on Sunday 31st October with the winning numbers printed in the December magazine. The November draw takes place on

Sunday 28th November and the winning numbers will be printed in the February magazine.

Congratulations to both winners, who have both won before. The lucky second prize winner had a first prize win only 3 months ago with one of his other numbers! The numbers are always well mixed up every month, it’s just the luck of the draw.

We welcome a new member this month who will be in the draw in October for the first time.

I know I say it often but it really is true – there really is a very good chance of winning in the Kirton Church Fund (KCF) monthly draw. Currently we only have 36 people taking part (three people fewer than last year!) with only 47 live numbers in the draw (9 of the thirty six people have 2 numbers each and one person 3 numbers.) So we really do have plenty of room for more members Why not come and join us? Anyone over 18 may take part.

The prize fund each month is 1/4 of the money taken each month. The rest of the money goes to Kirton Church. The more people that join the higher the prize fund and the more money we raise for Kirton church.

The church is still trying to raise the money to repair the roof of both side aisles and the cancel roof which are all leaking badly, especially with all the rain we have been having recently.

You can join at any time during the year at £5 a number per month and therefore £60 annually, £30 for 6 months and £15 for 3 months. You can of course pay the £5 monthly if you wish. Not already a member? Then why not come and join us?

A large thank-you to Richard Slater for clearing the Public Foot Path through to the field so we can now use it. Richard used his own time and equipment to cut down stinging nettles and made a wide path through. Many thanks from us all.

Kirton Kids Club

How quickly our seasons seem to change – one day it is summer the next autumn!

The children just adore conkers – for some strange reason they make them happy to find and very happy to take home.

They are like some shiny brown jewel that makes them want more and more – pockets and bags bulging ( usually to the horror of their adults). The trees in the church yard dangle their branches over the outside space at the Youth Centre and drop them everywhere, much to the children’s delight. It is good to see that something from nature can make them so happy.

The kids club is beginning to get busy and there are no places left at the breakfast club session but a few after school.

ScoutAid; Here’s to another 29 years

As most of you may be aware the ScoutAid Charity shop in Kirton, fondly known to many as ‘the scout shop’ has gone through a bit of a transformation, not only has it got bigger, it has also moved.

We had been in Station Road for nearly 30 years, but due to reasons beyond our control we had to relocate, and managed to secure new premises in High Street (formally Beesons the Butchers).

All those years ago, the shop was originally the idea of Mary Duff, who had previously been a cub scout leader and group scout leader and is now, still very much part of the group as one of the main volunteers of the shop, along with around 20 other dedicated volunteers who give up their time freely to manage the shop and raise money for the group; their efforts have recently enabled the group to purchase a mini bus so that we can take the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts on trips and camps. It also enables the group to subsidise such things as camps, trips and meeting supplies, as we aim to keep costs low to ensure that no member should miss out.

We will open on 23rd October, so, by the time you read this we should already, and you may have even visited us.

Our opening times remain the same, Mon – Fri 9am to 4pm and Sat 9am to 2pm, but please we can only accept donations during our shop opening times, we wouldn’t want either you or ourselves to get into trouble.

A very excited ScoutAid team

Remembrance Day Parade

This years Remembrance Parade will be taking place on Sunday 14th November we will be congregating in the War Memorial ready for the 2 minutes silence at 11am. The council have arranged the road closures so there will now be able to run the parade from the Town Hall to the War Memorial, we will hold a service there and then the parade will march onto Kirton Parish Church, where we will hold another service. We look forward to seeing the village community join together in the Remembrance Service this year.

Cleaner Required

A cleaner is required for a 2 bedroom bungalow in Sutterton for 2 hours once a fortnight. £12.50 per hour paid. If interrested please contact Mrs B. Ramsden on: 01205 461451.

Womble Macmillan Coffee Morning

Wombles continue to improve our local villages, town and environment.  There are a lot of regular routes some Wombles clean up weekly, sometimes finding much less rubbish thankfully. Maybe our message is finally getting out there. There will always be some that don’t have a care in the world about dumping and fly tipping rubbish. The appointment slot has been removed now so there is no excuse for fly tipping. If people can be bothered to load a car and go out late at night to dump, they can surely go to the local recycling centre. 

The Council also introduced free bulky waste collections for residents. This ran throughout September and they offered a free collection for up to three items.  Let’s hope this continues in the future and deters more fly tipping. Great Uncle Bulgaria, Steve Slater, continues to work closely with Boston Borough Council to make as many improvements as possible. 

The Kirton crew have continued to be busy on their weekly Tuesday morning Womble. After several weeks Wombling further afield in surrounding Villages we will be concentrating again on Kirton.  We should be able to get into the dykes and clean up the verges again. We gave the Memorial a spruce up, weeded, sweeping the leaves and general tidy up in readiness for the Remembrance Service. 

We now have 14 schools, plus the Scouts, actively working with their pupils which is fantastic.  Contact was made with a further 6 schools in May/June but no replies at the time of writing, despite a reminder being sent. 

You may have seen a separate note last month about the amount raised from the Womble Macmillan Coffee Morning. We were absolutely delighted with the support this event raised and we must once again thank everyone for their generosity. Special thanks to Ian Parnell at Kirton Leisure who allowed free use of the premises and the wonderful donation of free teas and coffees. The final total was £1145.20. Amazing! Maybe we should have an annual event like this. Food for thought (or cake in this instance).
